Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O and super producer Danger Mouse have unveiled their new collaborative album, Lux Prima. Title track Lux Prima, which dropped when the LP was announced, offers a lush and vast nine-minute soundscape, while follow-up singles, January’s Woman and this week’s Turn the Light, take on a more traditional song format.
Lux Prima sounds so lush, in fact, that at times you wish that O and the Mouse had worried less about conventional song structure. The album’s weak spots are its choruses which- Turn the Light and Woman aside-feel tacked on, as if our heroes suddenly remembered that songs conventionally need choruses and acted accordingly. Karen O can write a killer hook-Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Zero and Maps proved that a long time ago-but the lackluster hooks on Lux Prima, Ministry, and Drown sit like a poorly-drawn mustache on an portrait
Lux Prima was born just over a decade ago from a drunken phone call from Karen O to Danger Mouse – real name Brian Joseph Burton – during which the pair vowed they would work on something together. It wasn’t until after O had given birth to her son, though, that recording finally began, and there is a beatific sense of contentment on songs like Drown, with its Kamasi Washington-like choirs and stately horns. Lux Prima is an accomplished record – proof that two wildly different minds can work seamlessly together. On Cage the Elephant’s fifth album, Social Cues, frontman Matt Shultz reacts to the breakdown of his marriage and the loss of three close friends.

Karen O, is having the strangest and possibly the most edifying career. Her band, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, is known for reckless punk-rock abandon but also for a pop ballad and an EDM banger. Her solo career added new textures: 2014’s Crush Songs traded children’s choirs and big bands for drum machines and tape hiss, revealing the beating heart behind the music by stripping away production values.

Karen O + Danger Mouse Lux Prima (BMG) Among the many musical genres spawned during the 1960s was a sophisticated strain of orchestral pop purveyed by such as John Barry, Burt Bacharach, Scott Walker and various Frenchmen that is oddly present in three albums on this list: Bruce Springsteen’s latest, the Weyes Blood album, and this, the unexpectedly cohesive collaboration. The album’s title is perfect: It’s got several single-worthy songs, but the vibe is chill and intimate: Think Massive Attack or the low-key offerings from their British progeny like Rudimental or Jess Glynne, or even some of Sade’s later work.
